Who we are

Sparks & Smoke is a live, cinematic trivia-quiz companion for a YouTube channel. You can play along from the sofa, race the clock, and — if you choose — join a ranked leaderboard. This policy covers this website and the companion quiz web app.

The data controller responsible for your personal data is Sparks & Smoke. For any privacy question or request, contact us at [email protected].

What we collect

What we hold about you depends entirely on how you play.

  • If you join the ranked leaderboard. We collect your email address (used for passwordless sign-in — we send you a login link or code, so we never store a password), a nickname you choose to display, and your quiz results and scores. Your nickname and score are shown publicly on the leaderboard; your email address is never shown publicly.
  • If you play as a guest. You do not create an account and we do not collect personal data that identifies you. You can enjoy the quiz without giving us your email or any other personal detail.
  • When advertising is enabled. If and when we run ads, our advertising partner (Google AdSense) may set cookies and process advertising identifiers and related technical data (such as your approximate location derived from your IP address and your device/browser information). See Cookies & advertising below.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not ask for sensitive information such as financial, health or government-ID data.

Legal basis

Under the GDPR and equivalent laws (UK GDPR, Brazil's LGPD), we rely on your consent as our legal basis:

  • You opt in to the leaderboard by choosing to create an account; that is your consent for us to process your email, nickname and scores for that purpose.
  • Any marketing or newsletter email is a separate, optional opt-in — never bundled with signing up to play.
  • Advertising cookies in the EEA and UK are only set after you consent to them.

You can withdraw your consent at any time — delete your account, change your cookie choice, or email us — and doing so will not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before you withdrew it.

Children

Accounts and the ranked leaderboard are only for people who have reached the minimum age that applies in their country (for example 13 in the United States and 18 in Brazil; 18 wherever we have no specific rule). When you create an account we ask for your country and birth year and check them against that rule; we store the birth year, the country and the rule applied.

Visitors below that age may play only as guests — with no account, no email, and no personal data collected to identify them. In line with the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has given us personal data, please email us at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.

Cookies & advertising

The quiz itself relies only on cookies or local storage that are strictly necessary to keep you signed in and to make the game work.

When advertising is enabled, we use Google AdSense to display ads. Google and its partners may use cookies and advertising identifiers to serve and measure ads. In the EEA and UK, we ask for your consent before any advertising cookies are loaded; if you decline, you will see only non-personalized ads (based on general, non-tracking signals such as the page content) rather than personalized ads (based on your prior activity).

You can learn how Google uses data from sites that use its services, and manage your ad settings, here:

  • How Google uses information from sites that use its services
  • Google Privacy Policy

Email & marketing

The email address you give for the leaderboard is used only to sign you in and to contact you about your account. It is not the same as subscribing to marketing.

Any newsletter or promotional email is a separate, optional opt-in that is never pre-checked. If you opt in, you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every message, or by emailing us.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data under the GDPR, UK GDPR, Brazil's LGPD and California's CCPA/CPRA, including the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you;
  • Correct data that is inaccurate or incomplete;
  • Delete your data ("right to be forgotten");
  • Port your data — receive it in a portable, machine-readable format;
  • Withdraw consent at any time;
  • Object to or restrict certain processing, and not be sold or have your data "shared" for targeted advertising without choice.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at [email protected]. We will respond within the time limits the law requires, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

If you are in the EEA, UK or Brazil, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection supervisory authority (for example, your national data protection authority, the UK ICO, or Brazil's ANPD).

Data retention

We keep your leaderboard data (email, nickname and scores) for as long as your account is active, or until you ask us to delete it — whichever comes first. When you delete your account, we remove your personal data, keeping only what we are legally required to retain.

Guests leave no stored personal data with us, so there is nothing for us to retain.

Where your data lives

We use a small number of trusted service providers (processors) to run the service:

  • Supabase — database and authentication (stores your account email, nickname and scores).
  • Cloudflare — website hosting and content delivery.
  • Google — advertising (AdSense), when ads are enabled.

These providers may process data on servers outside your country. Where that involves an international transfer, it is carried out under appropriate safeguards (such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses).

Changes & contact

We may update this policy from time to time — for example, when we turn advertising on or add new features. When we make a material change, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, let you know.
